Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity – the so-called VUCA world – are the environment we live and work in today and in the future. To succeed, individuals, teams and organisations need to improve their ability to adapt.
The Adaptive Leader is able to face volatility and change in the assignment, resources, environment, team or world. She can do this by possessing a unique blend of attitude, knowledge and skills.
Our game-based leadership training program opens the gateway to building adaptive leadership competencies using story-driven experiential learning for a memorable training experience.
As part of the two-day experiential learning programme, participants will

In 1969, humanity had a moment when everyone was looking in one direction – Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon and changed the world. Those who lived it still remember.
The next such milestone awaits with the Mars expedition. Our Adaptive Leadership Program takes inspiration from this ambition and brings the experience of settling Mars into the training room to engage participants.
Through storytelling and gamification, we increase the level of engagement and immersion in learning. Gamification builds more memorable learning moments and improves information retention and thus builds a positive attitude towards the changes needed. This way you get better training results and a better return on your investment.

Aha! Moments
The aha moment is a moment of sudden insight or discovery. The key exercises lead to moments of awareness where the rationale and emotion become intertwined, ensuring better retention of knowledge.
Attitude Forming
We open the minds of participants to the fact that there is value in being adaptive. For example, by discussing the impacts of a missing skill or knowledge. If we don't form an open attitude towards the topic, all other information will be brushed aside by "it doesn't work that way..."
Know-how Acquired By Experience
Video demonstrations, individual and group activities, stories, gamification elements... All this serves to connect the information to the experience. Unimaginative explanations have no place on Mars or in 21st-century training.
110% Practical Approach
The key part of the training is practising - for example, evaluating crew-members performance, resolving conflict between two engineers. Outside of the direct exercises, participants give each other feedback, that way also practising this invaluable skill.
Digital Tools Blended Into The Training Program
We use a multitude of digital tools before, during and after the training - Genially, Kahoot, Mentimeter - participants even have the chance to program their own robot. For an adaptive leader, technology as part of the solution comes natural and we prepare them for that as well.
Blended Learning
We take advantage of available moments to extend the training beyond the training room. For example, with pre-training materials, we reduce the need to cover theory on the spot and also form the expectations of the participants.
Individual Development
We all have different needs and therefore different key learnings from training. The 'Reflection Board' - a structured template for note-taking and reflection - supports individuals to distil their unique personal learning in a structured way.
Gamification And Story-Driven
We strive to create an effective developmental training experience. This is the path to better understanding and higher rates of knowledge application. The involvement of play promotes immersion in the training as well as complementary skills (collaboration, communication, decision making, etc.)

The training is suitable for leaders and team members who need to increase the level of adaptive, agile leadership. It is our opinion that a large part of today’s organizations operate in so-called complex environments, for which adaptive leadership training is an appropriate choice.
Typical participants are leaders in organizations with high levels of turnover, leaders who need to lead agile or hybrid teams…
The duration of the training is 2 days, typically 9:00 – 17:00 with a lunch break and two coffee breaks in between.
The maximum group size for this training is 12 participants and this is strictly adhered to.
A suitable training room for Mission to Mars is a big training room that enables the set-up of the gamification board – Map of Mars and enough space for activities.

In a face-to-face setting, Adaptive Leadership: Mission Mars is a two-day experiential program. We try to tailor all of our development activities as much as possible to the needs and capabilities of our clients. In the case of this program, shortening is not an option as the targeted learning associated with the experience would not be possible to convey. Incidentally, the flight to Mars is estimated to take over 200 days.
Upon completion, the participants will be aware of what the role of an adaptive leader entails, what skills are needed and why they are important. They will also practice some of the skills.
With deliberate focus, they will be able to use some of the skills immediately in practice. To achieve full competence and subsequent mastery, development needs to continue – formally and/or informally. We are ready to advise you on how or even provide follow-up activities.
The Mission to Mars is an important input to the topic of the adaptive leader. It is the initial step on the path to gaining mastery.
Adaptive leadership as a concept is built for complex environments (see Cynefin framework here). This means that it is suitable in organizations, departments, teams or projects that are characterized by complexity of inputs and outputs, ambiguity, and the assumption of frequent or large changes. Typical examples include hybrid teams in larger organizations that are tasked with adding value using shared resources.
For simple environments, Adaptive leadership is not recommended as an all-encompassing solution. However, even in simple environments (e.g. accounting department), adaptive management might be beneficial for select projects, which fulfil the characteristics of complexity.
Organizational leadership support is extremely important for adapting this leadership. If the adaptive leader is to continue to function bound by the constraints of a rigidly hierarchical and reporting structure, it is unlikely to work. If you perceive that your organization is not yet ready for adaptive leadership, we recommend that you begin to shape attitudes toward change and adaptability at the middle and senior management levels. We can help you in this regard with attitudinal workshops and talks, get in touch and we’d be happy to discuss.
