The challenge of mental health in the workplace

Workplace mental health challenges are becoming a growing concern for organizations worldwide. In the EU alone, over one in six people experience mental health issues each year, impacting their ability to function effectively at work. Workplace stress, heavy workloads, and poor work-life balance are among the key contributors to burnout, decreased productivity, and higher turnover.

As the stigma around mental health slowly fades, organizations are realizing that investing in their employees' mental well-being is not only beneficial but essential for sustainable growth. Poor mental health costs the EU economy over €600 billion annually, with much of this due to lost productivity. At DEVELOR, we believe that addressing mental health proactively is a strategic advantage, one that enhances both individual and organizational performance.

At Develor, we believe that mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness, but rather a positive state of functioning and resilience. Balancing performance demands with emotional well-being, however, is increasingly difficult, leading to stress, burnout, and disengagement. Addressing these issues requires more than temporary fixes; it calls for a proactive, supportive approach that fosters long-term solutions.

Our practical, business-relevant training programs go beyond simple stress-relief techniques. Through our extensive business experience, we've recognized that workplace stress is often rooted in deeper issues, such as personal efficiency challenges, low confidence, and leadership pressures. To address these complexities, we go beyond simply offering mental health-focused courses, but take a holistic approach to address these underlying causes, too. By improving mental health, boosting personal effectiveness, and enhancing leadership abilities, we help both leaders and employees achieve sustainable, lasting solutions.

    Insight 1

The hidden costs of ignoring mental health

Mental health issues can quietly undermine an organization’s success. Employees struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression are more likely to disengage, miss work, and underperform. The costs of ignoring these challenges are significant, from increased absenteeism and healthcare costs to higher turnover rates. In fact, workplace mental health problems can account for up to 4% of the EU’s GDP each year.

    Insight 2

Resilience and well-being - Key to employee engagement

DEVELOR’s L&D Kaleidoscope 2024 survey revealed that resilience and well-being are top priorities for organizations. One in three L&D professionals identified these concerns as critical, underscoring the need for immediate action. Building resilience not only helps employees cope with stress but also enhances engagement, loyalty, and productivity. Organizations that focus on mental well-being often experience improved retention rates and a more motivated workforce.
